Convergent Lives

48% of neighbourhoods within Manchester are among the most deprived in the UK. With the disparity between rich and poor on an exponential curve, to what extent can architectural intervention narrow this inequality?

Interactions, a performative relationship between people, and structure, construct the fabric of the city establishing layers. Synthesizing these layers conceptually provides valuable insight to the relationships performed between socio-economic classes. This lends one to speculate the architectural and social consequences of integrating the breadth of Manchester’s community into a programme.

With this perspective in mind, the programme responds to the brief through three elements: ‘Living Lab’ – research into the impact of active leisure on community development, ‘Residential’ – affordable and accessible integration, and ‘The Highline’ – an urban proposition into the intrinsic flow between the disparate community.

Flow: a conceptualization of an individual’s life and a blindness towards a passerby’s vivid and complex environment. How different are individual’s flow? Can architecture provoke flows to integrate?
