Final Project

Cittaslow – The Slow Moving City

Manchester is famous as the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution, thanks to the invention of steam-powered engines. This historical event has had a big impact on both the environment and the people of Manchester with growing concerns about climate change and its effects on health, I suggest a solution called Slow Living (Cittaslow). This means promoting a lifestyle where locals grow their food, trade with neighbours, and walk instead of using cars.

The design concept aims to blend with Manchester’s diverse urban landscape, using materials like recycled timber, steel etc. The massing involves breaking up the site with canals to create public spaces on the ground floor for quick movement, while housing would be on upper levels connected by bridges and walkways for slow movement. This design encourages a balance between community interaction and personal space, reflecting the essence of slow living in Manchester’s dynamic environment and having rooftop gardens to bring a sense of community. Regarding the Research and Development of my scheme, I looked at using the idea of a Living Lab in which everyone in the space contributes to the advancement of certain issues and problems within this city within a city (undeveloped but would like feedback on this part of my scheme as well).

P2 Project

Waste Hub

The Waste Hub operates on a dual-purpose system.

Function 1:
The process involves obtaining epoxy resins in either liquid or solid states. In both cases, plastic and other chemicals are introduced into a reactor, followed by the addition of a caustic soda solution. After reaching the boiling point and separating the two phases with an inert solvent, the resin undergoes washing and solvent removal through vacuum distillation. The final step involves adding brick and aggregate waste, resulting in the creation of translucent bricks. These bricks are left to set in molds for 24 hours and are then transported throughout Manchester via trucks and boats.

Function 2:
In addition to its waste-reducing functions, the Waste Hub serves a second purpose: raising awareness about waste reuse. It provides a platform for the general public to learn about and appreciate the Resin Brick produced within the hub. Moreover, the Waste Hub serves as an exhibition space, allowing contributors to showcase their initiatives related to waste reduction and reuse
